It is almost a year since Suzanne’s spine operation and the issues it generated (hole in her spinal cord, multiple operations to fix it and then contracting menengitis) and I find myself in deep reflection of where we are and what our future holds,

The medical profesion has left us in a little nothingness, the current situation is however frustrating and draining.  We have tried our best to keep the severity of our situation private as it prove to be distressing to Suzanne to discuss it, but now we need your support more than ever.  I want you all to be part of keeping Suzanne’s artwork alive through this difficult nightmare. Making this post feels a bit  like giving up and has proven to be extremely difficult to write.

I have raided her Sketch books to find originals and unused images to create new artworks from but the truth is we are running short of suitable designs, Suzanne continues to keep  exercising her arms and hands to try to keep her abilities up to scratch but Sketches that may have taken an hour are now taking weeks, she isnt happy with the quality of them!  This is due to loss of feeling in her arms and legs and the constant pain she experiences.  The medications are strong and make her so tired and irritable and often cause her to be unable to think straight.  It has lead us to thinking of closing the shop and for me to seek part time work around the time I spend caring for her.  Sadly the time she requires makes even a part time job out of the question and instead we hope that the gorjussart and etsy shop will contribute to keep our bills paid.  Unfortunately as the months have progressed the lack of new works have taken their toll and we face stark financial problems, we do still have options available to us but I worry about our immediate future.

It has been a roundabout of highs and lows and it has taken its toll on me and I am struggling to keep up with emails and errors are creeping into the orders.  In order to make things more sustainable I am looking at setting a day specifically for making and shipping orders, rather than the current 48 hr options.  It will affect delivery times to a small degree, but will actually allow me to focus fully on the orders and hopefully help getting orders out on time and correctly.  At the moment I am hoping to make this day a Friday or possibly Weds, I may need to alternate it each week.   We are hoping to find a way for Suzanne to create artworks in her own time without the pressures of trying to pay the bills, and we do have some interesting ideas to share with you, please support us by letting us know if the idea is any good or not.  Time is a luxury we are struggling to find.

I’ll explain a little of how a typical day goes from Suzanne’ s point of view.

She will be woken by myself to get her to take her morning meds before I take the kids to school, she is rarely aware of what day it is and often has no movement or feeling in her legs and sometimes her arms.  The pain is intolerable and often as she wakes the squeals of pain start and I have to help her move the affected limbs and possibly rub them to help the feeling start to return ( to HER normal range of feeling!), normally this feels like the limbs are on fire for her and I find it so difficult to put her through this.  After a few hours the limbs usually come back under her control but are so weakened.

After dropping the kids at School I head home to help Suzanne get her morning routines completed, often I have to wake her again for this and the short journey on crutches to the onsuite bathroom is becoming more and more difficult. More often than not I have to carry her to and from the bathroom, other than this journey Suzanne goes nowhere. The only time we have to take her anywhere is to the hospitals and that is a process that utterly breaks my heart.  I can not possibly explain how painful it is to put Suzanne in the passenger car seat, lower it back so she can lie on her side with cushions everywhere and then set off on a journey of her screaming in agony all the way there and back.  Even in her wheelchair the pain persists and by the time we are seen she can’t answer simple questions like her name.

Our immediate goals are to get her able to sit in her wheelchair comfortably so thatour previous ‘normal’ life may become a possibility again, anything that allows us a degree of what we used to love back, but we have no guarantee’s that this will ever happen.  This is something that I have come to realise I have not accepted yet, I have attended many carers group meetings and now realise that I still hold expectations for our future that are now unrealistic.  It is so simple to assume that she will improve with time but the damage may be permanant. The orginal operation that left a hole in her spinal cord, the loss of CSF fluids, the many surgical procedures to fix the hole and the menengitis have all played a part in her current condition.  All could have lead to this damage, the only medical opinion we have is that if it doesn’t improve soons, it more than likely never will. Tthings are slowly getting worse, its so hard to know what positives we have when things are just getting more and more difficult.  We have exhibitions that are near impossible to get new materials for and again I scour old sketch books to find unused gems, sometimes Suzanne will colour them with her amazing pens over the weeks, and it leaves everything so last minute to ship to the exhibitions in time.

We decided we needed to involve you all in this situation not for sympathy but more for your understanding and support.  You all sent words of support and prayers when Suzanne was in hospital and this was a wonderful crutch, what we need from you now is the same, and please do not worry about ordering and filling my plate or overwhelming us with work, I will make time to get orders out with support to look after Suzanne for that day, this will be easier as the support services become more available to us.

The only thing we ask is to not request custom works or commission for the current time, we will make it very obvious if a time arises where this becomes a possibility again.

We promise we will do everything we can to keep our shop open, and keep you all updated through the dark times… and please do keep an eye on the wonderful products that Santoro are making (2011 diaries out now), and please do get your local shops to contact them to stock items.  Santoro is our bright future and we hope Suzanne will be able to build on it in time in some way.   For all the exhibitions, we are moving mountains to get works that are unused and exciting and unseen (including new works made over the weeks) with the new frames we have that are amazing, so please do pop by to see the works and if you love them, support us by buying them.

We know this is a difficult financial time for the world, and money is difficult to find, and with so many good causes around asking us for support and donations, I just have to say Sorry, we would love to donate and help but we’re struggling to keep our house as it is, and all our time is used up with Suzanne’s care needs and the needs of day to day life.  We have donated earlier in the year to some charities, and we love to support them when we can.  I hope we can support these causes again in the near future.

Thank you for your attention and please do encourage people who may be interested to read this post, and please comment below. Do not worry about hoping Suzanne will get well soon, its something I continue to do even in the reality of its unlikliness.

Before you all warn me to take it easy and make time for myself, I have spent months growing a support network of people that I can moan at and run to with problems, these are wonderful external services that I only wish were easy to find, our local carers centre has made all of this possible and I owe them a lot.  So I will be looked after so that I can continue to care for Suzanne to the highest degree.  Thank you all for your support in the past, and I thank you all for your continued support.

Best Wishes

Mr G.

  3. Suzanne & Mr. G: How are things going now? If she's still having as severe or more problems, maybe check into seeing if she might qualify to come to the US to see our specialists. Often, they will donate their time, hospitals donate the space and so on, or an area near you may be able to help you with expenses. They are doing some wonderful things with stem cell therapy now, and it may help if only to help relieve the nerve damage that is causing her pain. As for drawing, perhaps something like a Wacom Tablet might work – goes in the USB connector, and is very easy to operate – IMHO, easier than a pencil. It will interface with Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Paint Shop Pro. If you want more info about the tablet or the programs, including a donation for Suzanne, please contact me.

  4. Have admired these designs for a while. As a supply teacher, I was taking Colette's P6 class in Merrylee. I commented that her shopping bag was gorgeous . “That's what my sister calls it,” she replied. I love going into her class to see what bag she is carrying. Take care from Pauline Olsson.

  5. I often think of you Suzanne and so hoping that our Lord is giving you the strength to deal with what you are going through. I so feel for you and so admire your husband in taking care of you. May our Lord bless your family in needs that He knows and has heard from many prayers.
God bless you and your family Suzanne.
SO many love you through your art!
Many hugs n prayers being said,

  6. Will keep her in my prayers and pray for your situation.

  7. have only just found your site, my daugter has been using some of the designs for homemade cards and we discovered more of the range at Pink Art in Bath today. i realise that your post was from last august, but still simply had to respond. your story is heartfelt but also your love shines through. good luck to you all (and I have posted on face book – hope some of my 'friends' buy from you).

  8. Noticed your beautiful stuff in a local gift shop called The Bottle Kiln in West Hallam Derbyshire sometime late last year and thought it was fantastic. My 5 year old daughter and I picked a few bits to buy my wife for valentines which she loved. Looked you on the web tonight and found your story – don’t really know what to say but I would like to wish you both well and my prayers are with you.

  9. I was so very sad to read this, I only recently discovered gorjuss and didn’t know about Suzanne’s condition until now. My thoughts and prayers are with you both and I will do my very best to promote gorjuss and get your orders up so that you don’t have to find other work. God bless you xxx

  10. My kids love Gorguss products and are gradually building a collection of badges and notebooks. I have only recently been on this website as I was trying to find something special for my daughters 18th birthday. I am so sorry to hear of Suzanne’s health issues. All the best to both of you.

  11. Think of you and your family!
Your work is excellent and I definitly love it!!!
    Good luck to you all

  12. Huge Hugs and lots of prayers. There are amazing miracles out there in the medical comminuty and I hope you find the right doctor who can help you. I must say I never thought that would happen for me, but just over 1 year ago I finally had 2 brain surgeries and BAM, my life changed TOTALLY. My pain went away like a miracle and my seizures stopped. I had been having treatments all my life and taking medications for dozens of years with no help and 1 doctor fixed me after seeing me for 30 minutes he started me down a path that lead to the surgery that happened 5 months later. Now I can’t believe how much everything has changed. I will pray that you can find a new doctor and get the best help available. Her work is so wonderful and she touches people everyday.

    Huge hugs and prayers.

  18. For over a year, I have been a huge fan of Ms. Woolcott’s work, and I only found out today..

Dear Suzanne and Grant, I am so sorry about the situation and Suzanne’s condition… I pray that the Lord guides her and allow her to do what she so loves to do, as evident in her beautiful artwork… my mother was diagnosed with cancer a year ago and she’s a survivor who now bellows at the top of her lungs. Anything and everything is possible.

Big love to you both and your children from Los Angeles.  Hang in there, we all love you.. everyone who has seen Suzanne’s art fall in love. FACT. Gorjuss for life! Hang in there, Suzanne.. we all love you!

  19.  I saw your stuff for the first time a couple of weeks ago in my local wee shop ticketyboo in Saltcoats.  Despite having no spare cash I bought a couple of notepads and little badges for my wee girl becuase how could you see the range and not buy something it really is just aboslutely gorjuss.  I was just cleaning up and noticed the wee  notepad and saw that the artist was from glasgow so came downstairs to google her.  I’ve just read your blog and am heartbroken to hear of Suzanne’s terrible pain and suffering.  I can only hope and pray for her recovery or at least an improvement in her pain management to allow her more periods of relief.  I have already spoken to my friends of Suzanne’s work and intend to continue buying it.  Her work is simply beautiful.
My thoughts are with you and your family.

  20. I really appreciated your post, this would really provide the great information .Thanks for sharing.

  21. Just an update that Suzanne is STILL as serious as mentioned above. ! We will update if any change happens but we don’t want to be constantly repeating ourselves & droning on about it!

Thank you for your continued support – Mr G

  22. Dear Mr. G:  I live in the U.S. and just discovered Gorjuss from a cross stitch magazine.  She reminds me so much of my daugter, that I have been searching the internet trying to buy a cross stitch kit.  I love them all!  I also wanted to find out who the talented artist was and found your post.  I pray Suzanne will get better and wish the best for you and your family.  Let me know what I can do to help your family, whether it be spread the word of your wife’s beautiful art or a donation.  Best regards, Cindy

  28. Hello Suzanne and Mr G. I only discovered your beautiful art today and this is my first visit to your site. I am so sad to hear of your health troubles Suzanne, I do hope that things have improved for you since this blog was written? I am sure you have recieved the warm wishes, opinions and suggestions of a hundred others before me, and I truly wish that I had the miracle cure that you have been waiting for. I see a very helpful Osteopath that does wonders for me… yes I am clutching at straws, but maybe for pain relief it may help? like I said, I’m sure you have heard every suggestion and it must be incredibly frustrating for you both to hear the same things over and over when you have already been there and done that. One way I can help is to make sure that everyone I know is aware of your art ( I have a lovely friend who is also a wonderful artist and would love your work).  I purchased a few cards  featuring your designs today, and came to your site to look for prints. My purchase was only a small one, but now that I have seen your work I’m sure there will be many more! It must be hard for you to stay positive so I won’t suggest you try, but I will send you light and love and hope for bright and cheery things ahead for you both…..

….. now back to the shopping!

  30. You could do art books in volumes, many artists do this and people do love them.
you could sort them into maybe colour volumes eg: Gorjuss girls blue eddition and include The White Rabbit,The Sweet Cake
The Sweet Tea, The Moonlight, Gallup, Family TIes
    Forget Me Not etc
It would not take to much effort or time on your side and would be worth every moment of time.

    Good luck

  31. From the second I laid eyes on Suzanne’s art work in the form of a de-coupage kit I absoloutely fell in love with it, I havn’t been so excited about a set of images ever!!  I do hope you are both copeing well.  DOWN TO BUSINESS I see that you can now buy rubber stamps with the images on – so what us crafters need next is for you to come out with a range of Backing Papers to go with the Stamps, they just be like the stripes or just the background images of the art, then we would add our stamped image ourselves.  Also I am starting up a Craft Techniques class and wanted to introduce my class to the digi images from youselves, but as we are not allowed to print them off this is very restricting.  I will however buy a de-coupage kit and introduce them the this lovely art that way.  I agree with the lady below too, a tapestry with these images would be great.  Put me on the pre-order list.

  32. I have just read your post and it has totally saddened me. That’s an amazing amount of pressure for you all to cope with. I really do hope things improve, there is always hope….. Big hugs to you all xxx

  33. (((Sending you hugs of health & strength)))

My idea would be to sell the designs as dolls, I think they would be highly popular and even better if you could get in touch with Charlie Bears to see if they could come up with something, they are hugely popular at the moment the steiff of England is what I call them, and I know they also dabble in the odd doll so it’s worth thinking about, kids of all ages would buy them, I know I would and i’m 40yrs 🙂 xxxxx

  34. Latch Hook , I’d love a Gorjuss Latch Hook 🙂 x

  35. I can’t imagine how hard that must be for the two of you, and I don’t have the words to help, I wish I did, but I truly love what you do.  Suzanne’s artwork is inspiring and moving and I dearly hope she is able to continue to share that with us and I hope the artwork can still remain a source of comfort to her too.  I’m a teacher and us teacher’s love our stationery, how about some kind of teacher themed products, I for one would love to see a school year diary running from July to July if possible.
I wish you both truck loads of strength and I hope the sun shines brighter on you both

  36. With warm greetings from Germany,

i just read this lines and i´m very touched by your story. This week i discouvered your lovely artfull work in a tiny bookstore in frankfurt and fell in love with those pictures. I want to let you know that this ist the most beautiful artwork i`ve seen the last years and i please you not to give up, even though there won´t be any new work coming out. These pictures have such a warming character – that`ll last forever.

Suzanne from the deep of my heart i wish you all the best in the world, i think of you everytime i write in that book i bought from you, knowing how it feels when you cannot use your arms or legs. Multiple sclerosis has teached me.

Sending you both a lovely colourful rainbow of hope.

  37. Amazing art work like nothing i have found before. My love and prayers are with you all, and Suzanne you are one special lady, i know your in pain and suffering. My now 2 year old daughter had meningitis at 1 day old, it was living hell. Make up bags and vanity cases and jim jams are all something i think would sell in big department stores as well as independent shops. Keep the faith!!

    with love

  38. Hello Mr G and Suzanne and a happy 2012 to you both.  I have just discovered Little Gorjuss for the first time and hope so much that life is improving on your message above.  God bless you and the family xx

  39. I just discovered Suzanne’s work at a local bookshop in Paris and simply loved it. I instinctively bought a postcard and in doing so decided to find out more about this universe that is so warm, pretty, fresh and dreamlike. After spending a few hours on both the blog and the shop I had decided yo purchase a few things because I find them inspiring and beautiful. To now know how things are for the shop, I hope that my contribution will help you keep going… It would be so sad not to have Gorjuss girls and dreams around 🙂

    A new fan, Paris

  40. Suzanne and Mr Grant, I am so very sorry to hear all of this and the pain Suzanne is going through. I can not even begin to imagine the pain she is going through. I do pray for you Suzanne that you get better soon and with no more suffering with pain. I feel so bad Mr G that you have to watch a loved one go through all this.   I will have you all in my thoughts and prayers. Wishing for the best for you all.

  41. Best of wishes to both of you.   I know what it is like as I have Fibromyalgia and am unable to do much as well.   I am willing to take whatever art and whenever it becomes available.   Please let her know that I love her artwork, and am pulling for her.

  42. I must admit to being new to this web site, but I’ve loved Suzanne’s work for a long time. I had no idea she had been going through all of this, and I wonder how she is today, Mar 7, 2012. I have a Christian group with members from across the world, even though I live in Fort Worth, TX, USA. I am going to try to copy and paste this information into an email to request prayers for Suzanne.

  45. I absolutely adore Suzannes work – I first came across it at a stationery shop in Marple, Cheshire and well – put it this way – Father Christmas brought lots of goodies! including handbag for me! – how very thoughtful. I am married with 3 children and am a children’s photographer and I keep the tag from my handbag pinned on my notice board as inspiration when I am trying out some ‘arty’ edit – especially if the child happens to be wearing stripy tights 😉 Hope things get better for you all soon. x

  46. I agree with this comment SO much – dolls would be a MASSIVE HIT!!!!!!  I think I would possibly decorate my entire life in this style if I could – and live in a dreamland – OK ….. I am scaring myself now 😉 but seriously great idea!!!

  47. Hey,
I am planning to visit Paris at the beginning of May, can you please tell me where this little shop is? I would like to visit it!
    Thank you

  48. Sending lovng wishes from Scotland to you both

  49. What can be said has already been said in every comment previously posted, Suzanne is in my prayers. Her talent is immense and she possesses a beauty within her drawings that touches the soul. I think her portraits would look beautiful on pendants and cameo style brooches, I would definitely buy some.

  50. Hello. I am sending my love and support all the way from the United States. I was born with three birth defects and have been disabled since 13, currently I am 35 years old.  I know you are doing all you can during this difficult time.  I cry as I am writing this, thinking of you and your family.  I truly hope Suzy can recover enough to continue her beautiful artwork, I utilize many of the Gorjuss stamps on my homemade cards and love them.  I am sending a big hug to you and Suzy. Please stay strong and know we are all thinking of you.  Best wishes.
