It is almost a year since Suzanne’s spine operation and the issues it generated (hole in her spinal cord, multiple operations to fix it and then contracting menengitis) and I find myself in deep reflection of where we are and what our future holds,

The medical profesion has left us in a little nothingness, the current situation is however frustrating and draining.  We have tried our best to keep the severity of our situation private as it prove to be distressing to Suzanne to discuss it, but now we need your support more than ever.  I want you all to be part of keeping Suzanne’s artwork alive through this difficult nightmare. Making this post feels a bit  like giving up and has proven to be extremely difficult to write.

I have raided her Sketch books to find originals and unused images to create new artworks from but the truth is we are running short of suitable designs, Suzanne continues to keep  exercising her arms and hands to try to keep her abilities up to scratch but Sketches that may have taken an hour are now taking weeks, she isnt happy with the quality of them!  This is due to loss of feeling in her arms and legs and the constant pain she experiences.  The medications are strong and make her so tired and irritable and often cause her to be unable to think straight.  It has lead us to thinking of closing the shop and for me to seek part time work around the time I spend caring for her.  Sadly the time she requires makes even a part time job out of the question and instead we hope that the gorjussart and etsy shop will contribute to keep our bills paid.  Unfortunately as the months have progressed the lack of new works have taken their toll and we face stark financial problems, we do still have options available to us but I worry about our immediate future.

It has been a roundabout of highs and lows and it has taken its toll on me and I am struggling to keep up with emails and errors are creeping into the orders.  In order to make things more sustainable I am looking at setting a day specifically for making and shipping orders, rather than the current 48 hr options.  It will affect delivery times to a small degree, but will actually allow me to focus fully on the orders and hopefully help getting orders out on time and correctly.  At the moment I am hoping to make this day a Friday or possibly Weds, I may need to alternate it each week.   We are hoping to find a way for Suzanne to create artworks in her own time without the pressures of trying to pay the bills, and we do have some interesting ideas to share with you, please support us by letting us know if the idea is any good or not.  Time is a luxury we are struggling to find.

I’ll explain a little of how a typical day goes from Suzanne’ s point of view.

She will be woken by myself to get her to take her morning meds before I take the kids to school, she is rarely aware of what day it is and often has no movement or feeling in her legs and sometimes her arms.  The pain is intolerable and often as she wakes the squeals of pain start and I have to help her move the affected limbs and possibly rub them to help the feeling start to return ( to HER normal range of feeling!), normally this feels like the limbs are on fire for her and I find it so difficult to put her through this.  After a few hours the limbs usually come back under her control but are so weakened.

After dropping the kids at School I head home to help Suzanne get her morning routines completed, often I have to wake her again for this and the short journey on crutches to the onsuite bathroom is becoming more and more difficult. More often than not I have to carry her to and from the bathroom, other than this journey Suzanne goes nowhere. The only time we have to take her anywhere is to the hospitals and that is a process that utterly breaks my heart.  I can not possibly explain how painful it is to put Suzanne in the passenger car seat, lower it back so she can lie on her side with cushions everywhere and then set off on a journey of her screaming in agony all the way there and back.  Even in her wheelchair the pain persists and by the time we are seen she can’t answer simple questions like her name.

Our immediate goals are to get her able to sit in her wheelchair comfortably so thatour previous ‘normal’ life may become a possibility again, anything that allows us a degree of what we used to love back, but we have no guarantee’s that this will ever happen.  This is something that I have come to realise I have not accepted yet, I have attended many carers group meetings and now realise that I still hold expectations for our future that are now unrealistic.  It is so simple to assume that she will improve with time but the damage may be permanant. The orginal operation that left a hole in her spinal cord, the loss of CSF fluids, the many surgical procedures to fix the hole and the menengitis have all played a part in her current condition.  All could have lead to this damage, the only medical opinion we have is that if it doesn’t improve soons, it more than likely never will. Tthings are slowly getting worse, its so hard to know what positives we have when things are just getting more and more difficult.  We have exhibitions that are near impossible to get new materials for and again I scour old sketch books to find unused gems, sometimes Suzanne will colour them with her amazing pens over the weeks, and it leaves everything so last minute to ship to the exhibitions in time.

We decided we needed to involve you all in this situation not for sympathy but more for your understanding and support.  You all sent words of support and prayers when Suzanne was in hospital and this was a wonderful crutch, what we need from you now is the same, and please do not worry about ordering and filling my plate or overwhelming us with work, I will make time to get orders out with support to look after Suzanne for that day, this will be easier as the support services become more available to us.

The only thing we ask is to not request custom works or commission for the current time, we will make it very obvious if a time arises where this becomes a possibility again.

We promise we will do everything we can to keep our shop open, and keep you all updated through the dark times… and please do keep an eye on the wonderful products that Santoro are making (2011 diaries out now), and please do get your local shops to contact them to stock items.  Santoro is our bright future and we hope Suzanne will be able to build on it in time in some way.   For all the exhibitions, we are moving mountains to get works that are unused and exciting and unseen (including new works made over the weeks) with the new frames we have that are amazing, so please do pop by to see the works and if you love them, support us by buying them.

We know this is a difficult financial time for the world, and money is difficult to find, and with so many good causes around asking us for support and donations, I just have to say Sorry, we would love to donate and help but we’re struggling to keep our house as it is, and all our time is used up with Suzanne’s care needs and the needs of day to day life.  We have donated earlier in the year to some charities, and we love to support them when we can.  I hope we can support these causes again in the near future.

Thank you for your attention and please do encourage people who may be interested to read this post, and please comment below. Do not worry about hoping Suzanne will get well soon, its something I continue to do even in the reality of its unlikliness.

Before you all warn me to take it easy and make time for myself, I have spent months growing a support network of people that I can moan at and run to with problems, these are wonderful external services that I only wish were easy to find, our local carers centre has made all of this possible and I owe them a lot.  So I will be looked after so that I can continue to care for Suzanne to the highest degree.  Thank you all for your support in the past, and I thank you all for your continued support.

Best Wishes

Mr G.

  1. What a tragic situation for you guys to cope with. Your openness and honesty is admirable, admitting there is something you need support with can sometimes be the hardest part. I am sure that your customers will be more than understanding about things working a little differently for the forseeable – this is real life, real people, not machines. My prayers for a miracle are with you guys.

  2. Ciao dall' Italia.

  3. Hey!

I had no idea… I'm such a big fan of Suzanne's work, I'm even thinking of getting a tattoo of one of her designs. My prayers are with you guys, so you can find peace…

    Best wishes from Costa Rica,

  4. ((( hugs ))) to you and your family.

It was a great idea to make those paintings as cross stitch kits. I'll buy some when I can 😉

  5. I'm a big fan of Suzanne's artwork.

All my positive thoughts for you.

  6. Dearest Mr G.,
I have to admit I've seen and admired Susan's art for a time now,but I had no idea as your circumstances. I am so deeply sorry and I pledge to pray for you all as much as possible. I already believe God will continue to strengthen and carry you and I sincerely groan that God will make things more bearable for Susan. I can relate to your situation because my husband is recovering from a second back operation which left a metal plate and four screws in his back and he is in pain still, the surgery was done in April 2010. Until I read your story I realized I hadn't thought it could be worse. So, I will pray for you and Susan and keep you all in my thoughts.

  8. OMG I have just read this after googling Gorjuss and I am shocked by the state that Suzanne has been left in. I truely feel for you and your family too as I care for my father who has Parkinsons, being a carer at 28 was never what my parents planned for me.

Anywho, I was googling because I have seen your products in Boots and I have to be honest I think I bought out the store, I have bought the pen sets, diaries, the tote bags and the calendars. I love the characters esp Ruby. I have told people at work about them and even the staff in the Boots store started to comment and one of them said that after seeing my purchases she went to look at the products and bought loads herself. I have found a little store on ebay that I have palnned to raid once I get paid I know its not much but I hope the sales do help without putting you under pressure to find more designs.

I truely hope things do get better for Suzanne, yourself and the family, its not much but hope has gotten me through some tough times, keep your chin up and my best wishes

  9. I am a card maker and have loved and used Gorjuss stamps. Today I attended a craft fayre and saw (and purchased) a Gorjuss bag. Looking for more wonderful products I looked online and found your blog. I am so sorry to hear of your recent troubles…. Your story really touched my heart…. I just wanted you to know that I am thinking of you all and that I will continue to follow Suzanne's progress… All I have to offer is thoughts and prayers but I do so without hesitation. Keep strong…. Losh x

  13. Thank you very much for these beautiful drawings.

My best wishes to both of you.

  14. I have been aware of Suzanne's artwork for some time now, but only just found this website. I had no idea of the desperate situation you and your family are in. My heart goes out to you all. I know how hard it can be to care for someone and I know to have the support is so important. I would like to say how much I love Suzanne's artwork. I cannot pass anything by without purchasing, sometimes I have to hold myself back! Deciding to do orders one day is a great idea. I doubt anyone would not support that. All the best and my thoughts are with you all. x

  15. Get Well Soon!

  16. My heart goes out to such a brilliant artist. Its awful having a csf leak. Its the worst. I have a cranial leak, which is just as difficult to find, and diagnose. The pain is off of the scale.

I pray to the Universal Angels and Helpers that an improvement is made. I know you have a good support network, but for 'leakers' as we are known: can I recommend a fab Facebook group – just search for “csf leakers” and its the ONLY one in the world that comes up. 100 members worldwide.

Interestingly there are a lot of UK people and Suzanne may benefit from knowing that we all post there, rant, moan and cry sometimes on it. I have spinal headaches from the low pressure and they are a million times worse than ANY migraine.

My heart really goes out to you both. Its agony having a leak, its torture watching a loved one suffer. I dont think people realise that if you have even had an epidural or lumbar puncture – it 'can' leak to permanent csf leaks. Fibrin glue and blood patches dont always work, although they can! Lets hope you can patch that leak. Its a very rare condition. I get Neurologists denying you can leak!! They just dont learn it. I know Suzanne maybe in far too much agony to go onto Facebook to that group, but the support there from the world has helped me no end. Im in the UK – may as well be in middle of Lebanon for all the help the NHS gives/doesn't. Lets all pray to a higher purpose that you get the right Consultant, the right care and knowledge of how to treat this ultra rare condition. Us 'leakers' are a rare breed and its so hard to even get a diagnosis. The body sure needs and likes its' fluids! Especially the brain and spine – its such a delicate balance (autonomic until it goes awry).

I wish you all the best in the world. Love your artwork, but hope more that you get the leak fixed. Try this mantra daily “heal and seal, heal and seal” – that's what we all do.

Blessings and Peace to you and your family xox

  18. I first spied “Gorjuss” art 12 months ago . It caught my attention as the charachter reminded me so strongly of our daughter Eilish and her 3 sisters . I wanted to send a photo of our girls to Suzanne to commission a drawing of the four girls together but could never bring myself to ask . I bucked up the courage to come to your site this morning and I read your plea .
Eilish was 11 years old when she had her 4th heart surgery . Things did not go well and she was placed onto a mechanical heart where her condition deteriorated . We waited for a donor heart and two weeks after being in ICU while standing on the foot path in front of the children's hospital a silly woman drove up from behind me sending me onto the road with her car on top of my leg . My leg was crushed and I ended up in a wheelchair . In the meantime Eilish had 3 more heart surgeries and we were told that if she survived she would not be the bright & lively girl we once knew .
Our days were very dark indeed and I understand fully what it is like to have the wolves at the door .
    1) I was lucky in that I had been nursing in ICU's for many years and I knew what was going on and if things made sense . I was lucky in that I had the best help and second opinions were always just a phone call away .
I thought that the first 3 heart surgeries were bad enough but Eilish astonished everyone and we forged ahead . I see now that those days were intended to prepare me for what lay ahead .
We continue to wait for a miracle either in a donor heart or a mechanical heart that can be implanted . But Eilish has just celebrated her 13 th birthday and she is fully mobile. I home school her these days but she is not the bed bound invalid we were told to expect . I have had to be very ball-sy ( something I was not !) and I had to be very organized ( something else I was not ) I do not listen to the negative and I don't go to the “support” groups but I insisted on finding answers and I did not care the cost . ( I will be working for a very long time but that's cool) We came to AUstralia just my husband and I and we don't have a lot of support but it is amazing what a little faith and imagination will do .
You clearly have both my friend .
    What did I learn ?
    1) Get another opinion on Suzanne's situation . Was the first surgery with an orthopaeadic surgeon or a neurosurgeon ?
Have you been assessed by a pain clinic? No one should be in that amount of pain and the goal of a pain clinic is to relieve pain. (they are in the UK )
Be direct with people in what you would like from them . People do not read minds .
AND approach Santoro about marketing Suzanne's gear to generate more cash for yourselves!! That will take a great deal of worry from you and allow you to focus full time on what matters most!

  19. I feel with you both and only hope Suzanne's health will improve. It is so sad how you have to struggle.
Why don't you sell older art several times? Why does it all have to be new? Her creations are so beautiful. I don't know if that is possible, since I have no idea how all works.
But I do wish you so much strength, success and never loose hope.

    Blessings,
    Barbara

  20. I am so sorry to read this, My 42 year old son has a spinal cord injury from the war. He has leg and arm problems that sound very very similar to Suzannes. He was informed today that this is permenent and will get worse. He can barely walk
My prayers are with your family
    Sincerely

  21. I have only recently found Suzanne's artwork and its so wonderful and heart warming! My secret santa at work bought me the gorguss 2011 diary, the stickers are a great idea. Good luck to both of you, I shall definately be buying anything I find! xx

  22. I am so sorry to learn of Suzanne's illness – I have only recently doscovered the gorgeous 'Gorjuss' range of products in my local stationer's and I absolutely adore it all! I am so thrilled to find an artisit who captures the innocence of childhood and reflects so exactly what I hold dear in life.

My very best wishes to all your family at Christmas & I eagerly await new designs as and when Suzanne is able to work. Sally xxx

  26. hello! All the things i would normally say the usuall stuff there is no point as you must hear it every day. What i can say is that i think you brave and anything you need to do as far as delivery and shipping is concerned just do what you need to do and we will buy around you! i love your work as many people who buy gorjuss must do i see a little bit of myself in each picture! I love that! I hope and wish for you both that things will get easier and that you find lots of little hidden treasures as you search through the sketches. All the best will defo keep shopping i love my diary and my notepads ….i use them all the time!! the small things in life are the best!!
    Hugs

    Alex

  27. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. It isn't easy to go through the emotional roller coaster on a daily basis and keep our sense of Self when we are caring for a loved one. Do take just a few minutes for yourself everyday because it will help you keep things in perspective so that you can get through this time in your life and to help Suzanne and your children get through things, too.
Adding products to showcase her artwork as some have suggested would be a huge success!! I've got family members that cross stitch. Any kind of clock (wall or alarm) would be a nice addition to the mix of products that have been suggested. Maybe create a year pack of desk top calendars to sell….I would create them for you for FREE just for the pure enjoyment of doing it!! And bringing back any of Suzanne's older works that were for sale at one time is another AWESOME idea.
Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.
Love and HUGE Hugs to you all
    Trish

  28. Just reading about your health issue. Suzanne, I feel for you. I can't imagine how painful it is not to be able to make your artworks as an artist, on top of all the physical pain!

I wish you all the best…

  29. I saw some of Suzanne's greeting cards in a local garden centre and commented to my mum how lovely they were and that I would like to put some on the walls in my baby girls room when she is a little older. My mum has just given Callula (my daughter) some for Christmas! They are beautiful. I came onto your website to see some other designs and clicked to read about Suzanne's health. I am very sorry things are so hard for you all. I am a Christian and I have seen our God do great things. I will pray for Suzanne, and for you and the children, believing that God will work a miracle for you, may He bless you all and may 2011 bring unexpected joy to you all.

  30. I have nothing exciting to say, but I am very moved by your situation and admire your strength and love. Keep hanging in there. You obviously have a lot of fans–I am among them.

    Bonnie from the USA

  31. Reading your message left me feeling so humbled and remindful that although I have some health problems they are nothing compared to Suzanne's. I will keep your family in my prayers and believe that someday she will be able to do the things she loves to do again. Bless you both.

  32. I picked up a little notebook a while ago and I couldn't stop myself from buying more gorjuss stuff. There's a quality to her art that reaches out to people. I can't do much but I do want you both to know that I'll keep both of you in my prayers at night.

Lots of well wishes from Singapore…

  33. Hello there!!, hope you can translate this…

    Suzanne:

    Liz Zamora

  34. You're all very much in my thoughts and prayers. I love Suzanne's work and still have the excitement of discovering all the designs I haven't seen. I've suffered quite severely from depression and Suzanne's work has meant a lot to me. I'm starting to see it sold in more and more places so hopefully you will soon get the success you deserve. Don't lose hope, you have a lot of people behind you.

  35. I pray for her you and your family and i wish with all my heart that she will be able to go back to her normal life very soon. Went today to see if she has any new tubes but not i got the latest and is nothing new, this really breaks my heart because i want her to be able to do what she loves.
Please take care a big hug from Colorado.
May the universe conspire in ways that all your wishes are realized in 2011.

  36. Hi to both of you – here we are in another year and I am sending happier and healthier vibes to you both as you tread your road of life. I hope that Suzanne continues to progress and that you are getting a little break every now and then.

Love, hugs and loads of zen flowing for you both.
    Janet

  37. Hi there and I hope that 2011 is a happier and healthier year for you all. Suzanne I hope you progress and that there is positive news from your doctors about your condition. Just stay positive (and I know that's easy for me to say and not so for you to do) but that is really necessary.
Love and hugs and loads of positive Zen flowing to you all.
    Janet

  38. I am so sorry to hear about your situation! I, too, have major back problems (I've had scoliosis since I was 14 and I'm 67 now). I have had 2 surgeries putting a rod in my back, then a “cage”, over the years for it, but like Suzanne, I still have a ton of pain. Someone else suggested you might try a pain doctor and I add my support of that too. They can give more and better pain meds and can suggest pain pumps and stimulators that may help with the pain. Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to get rid of it totally, but getting it to a manageable level can really be a tremendous relief. My prayers are with both of you and I must commend you, Mr. G., for what you are doing to help your wife! I really love the Gorjuss artwork but I can't afford it as I'm on a limited income. I hope you decide on some of the great ideas people have posted – they all sound great! Especially the cross-stitch – I don't do it anymore since I got a computer, but I would have loved to have had these adorable girls to stitch!lol Thanks so much to both of you for sharing with your fans. And best wishes to all of you.

  39. I am so sorry to read about Suzanne´s terrible moments, but please never surrender. Her art is so beautiful that sometimes you don´t need to make new draws, maybe using old designs in new stuff can help. The cross stitch kits was a good one, suggest Santoro about amigurumi designs, crochet crafter can make Suzanne´s girls patterns,be sure is going to be a succes in the world of kawai things.
And think about other countries far away Europe,of course it going to be a bit expensive, but new markets can help.
And last, never give up,in my family we have a lot of bad moments with differents type of cancer, doctors don´t give us chances, they were wrong. So you must be strong, and have faith,I send you my best wishes Mr G.,give Su kisses from me, miracles exist!!
Hugs and love from Buenos Aires,
    Mónica

  41. OMG, I am really impressed with your story… I am writting to share my support, and to let you know I am starting to see gorjuss postcards, stationery and so on in Madrid and in smaller cities in Spain (I even got a beautiful notebook as a Christmas gift and I simply love it- that is what brought me to this site). I think Suzanne is very talented and I believe you are going to be very successful, not only in Spain but everywhere.

I wish you both the best in the dark night of the soul you are going through, courage and faith, and perfect health comming back to Suzanne.

    Big Hug!

  42. I was bought my first bag at christmas after nagging my husband that I had seen it in our local art shop. They truly are gorjuss.

My thoughts are prayers are with you and your family in this truly awful time.

Why not use the designs that you have to do matching purses and umbrellas to go with the bag designs that have sold really well, our local art shop cant keep up with demand.

  43. Thank you for writing such a personal post. I am so sad to hear about this. I love her work and am so sad she is in so much pain. You are wonderful for being such a caring and supportive partner to Suzanne. I wish you both the best.

  44. You're always on my mind and I think about you as I enjoy countless canvas prints and the original Tepid. I am getting a new tattoo (I have 5 so far) of your work of the mermaid in March. I wish I had more words to comfort you but I understand as a chronic pain sufferer how the rug can be pulled right from under you and the life we had planned out for ourselves makes us pause and renew and readjust. Stay strong. We all love you!

  45. I don´t speak english very well, but I read the problem e want do give her a kiss. I´m from Brazil and like very much her printings.
    I pray for her.
    Silvia Castelo

  46. Hi Suzanne,
My name is Marcia, I am Brazilian and my work is with cold porcelain, I knew your work recently. I made some dolls inspired by your drawings, it was difficult to make, but the result is very beautiful!
I would like you knew that here in Brazil people have been passionates for your job, more and more each day, we have published a lot of your drawings on social networks like Orkut.
Only today I knew everything that happened to you, I want to say I´m so sorry for all that!
We are praying for you, to you never to feel pain again, to be healed.
With God nothing is hard, He can do anything for us, and that's what we've request to you.
A big kiss and God bless you.

(Sorry, my english is not so good)

  47. Dear Suzanne and Mr. G~
I fell in love with the Gorjuss Art Series when I discovered art and graphics a few years ago!
I had no idea of the physical and emotional ordeal that you both were dealing with this past Fall. I am truly sorry for you both and I hope that the situation has improved.
My thought and prayers are with you both!
Lots of love and hugs ~ maggieb

p.s. Some of the ideas I read before posting were excellent! Suzanne's work is so beloved and well known, some of the suggestions might be a great way to reach out and share with a whole new audience.

  48. I will keep you and your lovely wife in my prayers. Her artwork has been such a tremendous joy to my heart. gorjuss girls where the eyes just say it all. I know God answers prayers God bless you and your family. xoxo
